Imagine Just:
Community Co-Creation Session 6

We’re All Visionaries: Thoughts from Our Sixth and Final Community Co-Creation Session

“What if we abandoned the caste system and reimagined gentrification… where residents built their communities the way they want them to be.”

It can be overwhelming – scary, even – to begin the process of dismantling oppressive systems and reimagining a truly just society.

But if not us, who? If not now, when?

“When I dream big, I dream about the abandoned city-owned lot across from me becoming a lush garden with a stage where a band can play.”

Our Imagine Just Community Co-Creations sessions are proving that we’re all visionaries. Tapping into our collective imaginations and speaking out loud our dreams is a powerful exercise, and an important first step in building a community of practice to make these visions our reality.

Over the course of our six sessions, we heard lots of bold ideas on how to transform not just the arts and culture sectors, but philanthropy and nonprofits as well.

“It’s not about replacing nonprofit structures, but what kind of structures will we have to support communities, to support a viable and sustainable livelihood?”

The sessions are also confirming what we already know – we already have the solutions for transforming our society. They lie within the communities that have been pushed to the margins. And artists and the arts and culture sectors can and should play a leading role in bringing forth the change we want to see.

By allowing us to tap into our individual and collective joy and creativity, the arts can be “the key to opening up the full expression of human beings” and to transforming our society.

It’s hard to believe our sessions have ended. We have a lot of information to distill and synthesize, and we’ll share that out over the coming weeks.

But we’re not done yet. There’s a lot more Imagine Just ahead. You can submit an idea on our website, and sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date on what’s next.
